Submissions for the annual Cân i Gymru close on January 8th. Cân i Gymru which means “Song for Wales” is an annual song contest run by the Welsh language channel S4C. A total of 6 artists are selected by a jury each year to compete in a final. In the final a 50/50 jury and televote is used with the winner taking home £3,500 prize and the right to represent Wales at the Pan Celtic Festival 2014.
The rules for the contest are as follows:
- You must over 16 by January 8th
- Songs must be submitted on CD, cassette or MP3, with a written copy and application form by 5:30 on January 8th
- The songs must be in Welsh
- No longer than 4 minutes and 30 seconds
- The songs must not have been previously released online, played on the radio or commercially available to download before the contest.
The venue and date of the 2014 contest final has not yet been announced, but in previous years has been in Pontrhydfendigaid and Llandudno.
Cân i Gymru began back in 1969 when BBC Cymru wanted to enter the Eurovision Song Contest, however to date the contest has never been used as a Eurovision selection process.
In 2013 the winners of the contest were Jessop a’r Sgweiri with their song “Mynd I Gorwen Hefo Alys” which translates in English to “Going to Corwen With Alys”, you can watch their performance below:

There’s no reason why this couldn’t be used to select the UK’s Eurovision entry, S4C being an EBU member after all…
I’m sure they’d do better than Engelbert and Bonnie!
why? because most of their songs (UK Eurovision Entries) are in English.
it would be great to see Welsh been represented in the Eurovision final, Wales could be the next Serbia if they entered Eurovision.
Hi Martin, its me Scotty from Eurovision Times, I didn’t know you visited Eurovoix?
BBC has exclusive rights to the UK eurovision so S4C would not be able to select the UK entry even though they are in EBU
Get rid of the Pan Celtic Festival!!!! Get rid of Can I Gymru!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why Becca?
I don’t think those two contests should exist!
But why not, I want to know your reasoning.
Whoever founded those two contests should be sorry.
AHAHA LOL to the above^^^^ Can I Gymru is nothing like Corrupt Turkvision. Can I Gymru should be used for a possible Welsh representative in ESC and JESC, I think to be honest its time the UK split up for Eurovision 2015, especially if Scotland get independence this September. And Wales would have to qualify to the final, Can I Gymru, would be guaranteed to select a very sophisticated high quality entry, more worthy of a place than some of the crap Lithuania gets into the final with.
Although I don’t think I would fancy Jessop a’r Sgweiri with “Mynd I Gorwen Hefo Alys” in the Eurovision final for the UK, but a welsh power ballad/operatic ballad would be spectacular.
Is it my computer, or why does the article say it’s were publiched on 2nd of January?
The theme we run always gets confused this time of year and ends up bringing up news from the start of 2014, it’s entertaining. So yes this article was published in January 2014.
