RTE has this evening confirmed that Brendan Murray will be representing Ireland at the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Brendan Murray has been internally selected to represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. Brendan is a former member of the boyband Hometown, the group was formed in 2014 and to date has had two number one singles within Ireland. Hometown announced earlier this month that they would be splitting to pursue individual projects. The group have toured extensively in the UK and Ireland and have supported such acts as Olly Murs, McBusted and The Vamps.
Brendan Murray was selected by Louis Walsh to represent Ireland at next years contest, in consultation with RTE. Louis Walsh is a well known Irish music manager as well as a former judge of the X Factor in the United Kingdom. Over the years he has managed Westlife, Jedward and Union J.
The song that Brendan will be performing in Kyiv has yet to be decided with an open call for songs being made by RTE. Louis Walsh and the judging panel will consider all songs that are submitted through the selection, but will not solely consider songs selected through this process. The closing date for entries will be at 5pm on Monday, the 16th of January, 2017. Entries should be submitted to Eurovision Song Contest 2017, RTÉ Entertainment, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
Ireland will be hoping in 2017 to make their way back into a Eurovision Song Contest final, having failed to qualify every year since 2013. The countries best result in recent years came thanks to Jedward in 2011, the twins performed “Lipstick” on stage in Dusseldorf, coming home in 8th place, the countries best result since 2006.
Brendan Murray will be appearing alongside Louis Walsh tonight on the The Late Late Show from 22:30 CET on RTE One.

A few people on Wiwibloggs were saying nasty things about Louis Walsh’s taste in music. 🙁
Nah seems a serious choice tbh, Louis looses the plot when joke novelty acts come along and he’s really bad with managing girl groups… all his girl groups flopped on X factor but he knows how to do boy bands and ones that have potential and are current should do fine
