Italian singer and Eurovision winner and host Toto Cutugno has died today at the age of 80.
Salvatore Cutugno, better known as Toto Cutugno, was a popular Italian singer, songwriter, and TV host. His career started in the late ’60s and counts more than 100 million copies sold. His most famous song is perhaps L’italiano, the Italian, released in 1983 and charting all over the world. He was also one of the 5 artists to detain the record of participation in the Sanremo Festival, having participated 15 times and having won one (in 1980).
To Eurovision fans he is well known as the winner of the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, and as the host of the 1991 contest in Rome, Italy. The song that with a score of 149 points led to Italy’s second victory is called “Insieme: 1992” and it is intended to be a hymn for cooperation and togetherness among European countries.
Cutugno’s manager Danilo Mancuso delivered the news. He explained to RAI News that the singer had been suffering from an illness for long, but the situation had grown worse in the last few months. Cutugno was recovered in Milan for a long time. He turned 80 at the beginning of July.
