French broadcaster France 2 topped the audience charts yesterday with the reveal of Louane’s entry for Eurovision.

An average of 9.51 million viewers watched the Rugby game between France and Scotland for the Six Nations tournament, making France 2 the most watched channel during the evening. Compared to the previous rugby game, the audience increased by almost 3 million viewers.

This game was important for two reasons: France was playing for tournament victory, but also because the French Eurovision entry was revealed during halftime.

The reveal of “Maman“, the entry of Louane for Basel, saw 9 million of viewers, with a share of 41.6%. This audience is 3.6 million viewers more than the audience that watched the final of Eurovision 2024 last year.

France finished twice in top 5 this decade, with Barbara Pravi ending up 2nd in 2021 and Slimane 4th last year. As a Big Five member, the country is automatically qualified for the Grand Final of Eurovision 2025 on May 17.

France was one of seven countries to participate in the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Since then they have participated in every contest aside from 1974 and 1982. Their withdrawal in 1974 was caused by the death of President Georges Pompidou, while 1982’s withdrawal was a result of TF1 declining to enter the contest. France has won the contest on five occasions, the most recent being in 1977 when Marie Myriam performed “L’oiseau et l’enfant”. France’s best result of the 21st century came in 2021 when Barbara Pravi finished second in Rotterdam.
