Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool has revealed plans for a range of celebratory events to mark Eurovision 2023, which is being hosted close by at the Liverpool Arena.
The Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool is planning a range of events that will take place in the run-up to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 which is being hosted just a short hop away in the Liverpool Arena. This will include a large amount of Ukrainian food and drink, live music and creative pop up art events.
The main centrepiece of The Royal Albert Dock plans is a 10-metre artwork called “Floating Earth” which will be placed in the docks from April 28 to May 18. This art work is by Luke Jerram and is made up of NASA imagery of the surface of the Earth. The 72 ft Challenger yacht from the Tall Ship Youth Trust will also be placed in the docks during the week of Eurovision 2023.

Eurovision 2023
Liverpool will host the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest at the M&S Bank Arena. The decision comes after multiple rounds of shortlisting various UK cities, as the winners of the 2022 contest Ukraine were not able to host. Eurovision 2023 will be held on May 9, 11 and 13.
Liverpool is known globally as the birthplace of the Beatles, as well as music events such as Africa Oyé, Liverpool International Music Festival and Sound City. The city is home to just under 500,000 people and is known for its iconic music venues and cultural events. The city is connected to the world via Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
The 2023 contest will be the first contest since 1979 in which the winning nation was unable to host the following contest. It is the sixth occasion overall on which a different country has hosted after the original host nation was unable to, following the Netherlands in 1960, France in 1963, Monaco in 1972, Luxembourg in 1974, Israel in 1980 and Ukraine in 2023. The 2023 contest will also extend the United Kingdom’s record of hosting Eurovision to nine times.

The United Kingdom debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957 and holds the record for the most consecutive appearances in the contest. To date, the UK has won the contest a total of five times, with their first victory coming in 1967 and their latest in 1997. The UK holds the record for the most second-place finishes in the contest, having been runner-up a total of 16 times. Since 2000 the UK has finished within the top 10 only three times, this being in 2002 with Jessica Garlick, 2009 with Jade Ewen and 2022 with Sam Ryder who finished 2nd in Turin.
