Footage has been unearthed of the moment that Gigliola Cinquetti was named as the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 1964.
The Eurovision Song Contest 1964 currently only exists in audio form and a very small clip, due to the footage being lost. Reddit user DYLCWS has been able to find footage of the contest not broadcast in nearly 60 years after contacting a number of broadcasters across Europe, who potentially held recordings.
The footage which was released onto Reddit comes from the YLE (Finnish broadcasters) archives and shows the moment that Gigliola Cinquetti is named the winner of the 9th Eurovision Song Contest. In addition, it shows a small part of her reprise performance of her winning song “Non ho l’età ”.
This is the second time this year that the Eurovision community has unearthed footage of the competition that was thought to be lost. Earlier this year footage was found from the first Eurovision Song Contest showing Lys Assia performing her reprise twice.
The Eurovision Song Contest 1956 and 1964 are the only contests where full video footage of the contest does not exist. Footage of the 1956 contest is presumed to have been destroyed and no longer exists, while the 1964 contest according to DR was never recorded.
