RTVSLO has announced this evening that a total of 127 songs have been submitted to compete in EMA and EMA FREŠ 2022.
A total of 127 songs were submitted to compete in the 2022 edition of EMA and EMA FREŠ. The number of songs submitted is down by 33% from the last time an open call for songs was made for 2020 when 191 songs were submitted.
The next stage in the selection is a review of all the entries by a jury formed of at least three experts. In addition, RTVSLO reserves the right to invite any additional songwriters or performers who meet the rules of the competition.
The acts that will compete in EMA 2022 and EMA FREŠ will be announced no later than December 20.
EMA FREŠ 2022
Newcomer artists who are not more than 30 years old and have released a maximum of three songs will first compete in EMA FREŠ. A total of 24 artists will take part in the selection, which will begin later this year. After a series of duels, 14 of these songs will take part in two televised shows in January. In each show, seven songs will compete for two places in EMA 2022; one selected by public voting and one selected by a jury. In total, four EMA FREŠ participants will move on to EMA 2022.
EMA 2022 will consist of two semi-finals and a final. In each semi-final, eight established artists and two EMA FREŠ artists will compete to advance to the final. Public voting will select three finalists and a jury will select another three. In the final, five five-member juries (50%) and public voting (50%) will decide which of the 12 finalists will represent Slovenia in Turin.

Slovenia was one of three countries to join the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993. The country qualified through a specially organised selection round called “Kvalifikacija za Millstreet” which was hosted in Slovenia, seven countries competed for three spots in Eurovision 1993. The country has participated in 22 editions of the Eurovision Song Contest. Their best result came in 1995 when Darja Švajger finished 7th scoring a total of 84 points, she is closely followed by Nuša Derenda who finished 7th in the 2001 contest with 70 points.
