The Nuove Proposte category has been dropped from Sanremo 2022, with two Sanremo Giovani artists gaining a place in the Campioni category.
RAI has announced changes this evening to the format of the Festival di Sanremo, with the scrapping of the Nuove Proposte category. The removal of the category comes with the return of two artists being chosen from Sanremo Giovani to make it through to the 72nd edition of the Festival di Sanremo.
Thirty singers will be selected from a submissions process to perform in live auditions for Sanremo Giovani, with each singer having to have two songs for the contest. Twelve singers will make it through to the final of the Giovani category on December 15. 8 singers will be chosen by a Music Commission headed by Amadeus, while 4 will be chosen by the Area Sanremo process.
The two artists who progress through to the 72nd Festival di Sanremo will have the chance to represent Italy on home soil at the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2018 Mahmood secured a place in the contest thanks to his participation in Sanremo Giovani, he went on to represent Italy at Eurovision 2019 with “Soldi”.
The 2022 Festival della canzone italiana di Sanremo is due to take place in the first week of February from the 1st to the 5th. It was revealed during a press conference in June that the Sanremo hosts will not be the same as the hosts of the upcoming Eurovision Song contest 2022 which Italian broadcaster Rai is also organising.
