RTP has this evening confirmed its participation in Eurovision 2022 with the opening of submissions for Festival da Canção.
Portugal is the latest broadcaster to join the line up for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. RTP announced its participation this evening with the reveal of the rules for the 56th edition of Festival da Canção which will be used to select the Portuguese representative.
RTP has announced changes to the selection process for the 2022. Four songs will be selected from the public submissions window, with the remaining 16 chosen by songwriters and musicians invited to participate by RTP.
The contest will once again be formed of two semi-finals, with five songs qualifying from each semi-final. The Grand Final will be held with ten competing entries, the winner will be determined by 50% televote and 50% jury voting.

Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1964 represented by Antonio Calvario, the country finished last scoring nul points. Prior to 2016, the best result of Portugal was 6th place which came in 1996 when Lucia Moniz performed in Oslo. She scored 92 points, receiving the 12 points from both Norway and Cyprus. Since their debut, Portugal have missed a total of five contests. In 2017, Portugal produced a spectacular win when Salvador Sobral took home the crystal microphone with his song “Amar Pelos Dois.” The 2018 contest was held in Lisbon, Portugal for the first time.
