RAI has confirmed that it will not be returning to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest this December in Paris, France.
The Italian public broadcaster RAI has confirmed to Eurofestivales that they will not be participating in Junior Eurovision 2021. Luca Milano who is the Head of Children’s channels at the broadcaster confirmed the non-participation of the broadcaster in Paris, France this December.
This is the first time since 2016 that the country which won the previous Eurovision Song Contest has not gone on to compete in the next edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest.
Italy withdrew from the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The broadcaster had competed in the contest since 2014 and was the first Big Five country to compete in the contest since 2007.

Italy debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2014. Their first and only win to date was on their debut, when Vincenzo Cantiello came in 1st place with 159 points with his song “Tu Primo Grande Amore”. Their worst result was in 2015 when twins Chiara & Martina came 16th with 34 points with their song “Viva”. Since their debut, Italy have participated in every contest.
