TVR is organising a televised debate to discuss the failure of the nation in the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years.
On July 5 TVR will broadcast Eurovision, pe şleau! (Eurovision, put bluntly!) hosted by Marina Almăşan on TVR 1. The show will feature guests: Horia Moculescu, Alin Dincă – soloist Trooper (Rock FM), Dan Manoliu, Dani Constantin – music director, Mugurel Vrabete (Holograf), Alexandru Urucu (Eurovision fan), Nicola, Andrei Partoş, Andrei Tudor, Elena Cârstea.
The debate which will last two hours will also be open to the public who can phone in to share their views and thoughts on the topic. The topics that will be covered in the show include:
- Why don’t Romania’s great voices participate in Eurovision?
- Why has the interest of Romanians towards Eurovision decreased so much?
- What are the solutions to rectify the situation?
Marina Almăşan is the former Romanian Head of Delegation who oversaw Romania’s best result since 2010 when Paula and Ovi finished 3rd in Oslo. Marina explained:
It’s been 11 years since I was at the helm of one of the most successful Eurovision editions. In 2010, my wonderful Paula and Ovi brought Romania a deserved third place in the Grand Final in Oslo, the artists outperforming Luminiţa Anghel’s performance.
I was, at that time, the head of the Romanian delegation, and my team was at the buttons, in all this sisy preparatory work – internal and external. Of course, without the two extraordinary voices, without the 10th grade song, without the charisma of the two talented artists, we wouldn’t have got here. There were, therefore, years in which the Romanian Television (through other valuable colleagues of mine) made a very good image, in the European competition.
Then, all of a sudden, … the movie broke. And the last years have brought enough frown and sorrow on the faces of the Romanians attentive to Eurovision. On Monday, July 5, TVR wants to finally put its finger on the wound: to find the weak points (but also the strong ones, because they also exist) of our participation in Eurovision, to propose solutions to remedy the situation and wash away shame .
I will moderate a heated debate, on the evening of July 5, on TVR 1, with chosen and skilled guests and even if it comes out with sparks, it is important that things go smoothly. And at the next edition, Romania should reach the top 10! … this if, after the discussions, it will not turn out that, maybe, it is healthier to stay on the bar for a year or two … The dialogue will be LIVE, which what for me – a live man – will mean a return to the good times! I thank the Romanian Television for entrusting this event to my team and … I hope we will not disappoint!
The show will also feature guest performances by former Eurovision participants Paula & Ovi and The Humans.

Romania first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, the country had tried to participate in 1993 but failed to get through the pre-qualifying round. At the 1994 contest Dan Bittman finished 21st in the final scoring 14 points, Romania didn’t make it through to another final until 1998. Romania’s best results in the contest are two third-place finishes. In 2005 Luminita Anghel & Sistem finished 3rd scoring 158 points, while Paula Seling & Ovi finished 3rd in Oslo with the song “Playing with Fire”. Romania missed the 2016 contest due to TVR being removed from the EBU.
