It has been confirmed that the upcoming third edition of Eurovision Choir that was due to take place in 2021 has been canceled.
Interkultur the Choral organisation who with the EBU has organised the Eurovision Choir Consted since 2017 has stated that the 2021 edition of Eurovision Choir has been cancelled. In a statement to Eurofestival News, Interkultur explained:
Unfortunately, the third edition of Eurovision Choir will no longer take place in 2021. As soon as we are able to announce more details on a future edition of the event, you will find the information on our website and social media accounts
The reasons for the cancellation of the 2021 edition of Eurovision Choir have not been stated but it is likely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Events such as the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 and the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest have been able to take place with maybe safety measures put in place but it is likely the nature of a choir with many people singing in one indoor space makes holding this event safely much harder. Back in September of 2020, it was confirmed that the third edition of Eurovision Choir would definitely take place during 2021.
Eurovision Choir has always been held as part of the European Choir Games since it was launched in 2017 with the event always taking place in the same city. Antwerp and Ghent in Belgium were due to host the European Choir Games in 2021. However, in October of 2020, it was confirmed that Belgium would not host Eurovision Choir 2021.
Wales was the only nation to have confirmed its participation in Eurovision Choir 2021. The following broadcasters have participated in the contest since its first edition in 2017:
- Austria – 2017
- Belgium – 2017, 2019
- Denmark – 2019
