The new President of RTVE has stated that the broadcaster will be taking the Eurovision Song Contest “very seriously” going forward.
José Manuel Pérez Tornero the new President of the Spanish public broadcaster has given his first comments on Spain’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. He told the Spanish press that:
We are going to take Eurovision very seriously. We are the only Spanish public television that belongs to the EBU, we are interested in the event and in contact with young people in their European context.
The Spanish broadcaster is currently going through a reorganisation with a number of key roles being changed. It has been speculated the Head of Entertainment and Spanish Head of Delegation will likely change, resulting in a new approach to the Eurovision Song Contest from RTVE.
Spain has one of the worst records in the contest in the past decade. The last time Spain finished in the top three of the contest was in 1995 and the last top ten appearance came in 2014 with Ruth Lorenzo.
Blas Cantó finished 24th out of 26 acts in the 2021 contest scoring a total of 6 points, the nations only points came from the Bulgarian and British juries.
