Speaking in the latest episode of The Euro Trip podcast, Polish representative Rafal has revealed when he was first contacted about representing his country at Eurovision this year.
The musician and television presenter first come to fame in his home country appearing on The Voice in 2011, and last year was one of the hosts of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Warsaw.
Speaking to host Rob Lilley, he shared more details about the decision made by TVP to internally select him and his song “The Ride”.
“It was really fast decision… like in half of the month of February they just call me and tell me that I will be going to Eurovision Song Contest this year. The TV station [TVP] make a regulation that they need to choose the song this year because in previous year they can’t do that…”
“They called a few artists, asked do we have songs… I sent my demo song ‘The Ride’… they asked if I could sing that at Eurovision. I said okay, and it happened so fast, it takes about three days to make a decision and it was shock for me.”
Singer Alicja Szemplińska had been due to represent Poland last year before the contest was cancelled, and has previously revealed she wasn’t contacted about returning this year.
As part of the interview, Rafal also revealed his favourite entries this year, saying there were a lot of high quality entries in the competition.
“I love San Marino, Switzerland, France, there are a lot of artists they sing perfectly and wonderful.”
He continued by saying it’s difficult to predict what will happen in May.
“Eurovision is sometimes a different contest because you cannot expect what will happen on the stage… so lets see.”
Poland will compete in the second semi-final in Rotterdam on 20th May, and you can listen to more from Rafal by scrolling to 32.54″ in this week’s episode.
