It has been announced that the hosts of Eurovision 2021 have all been honoured with their own tulip varieties.
Tulip Promotion Netherlands (TPN) have revealed that new varieties of tulips have been named in honour of the hosts of this year’s contest. The headline variety will be named “Edsilia” in honour of 2 time representative of The Netherlands, Edsilia Rombley.
This was part of their 2021 tulip season, which had to be altered due to COVID-19, which is running with the theme of “Let’s Connect”. The idea of Eurovision varieties came about because of their seamless connection to the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 theme of “Open Up”.
Edsilia has revealed that she selected the lipstick-red variety herself, saying that:
“The red color symbolizes love. Maybe obvious, but this cliché is just true. We are all red inside and everything the red color represents fits the theme; Warmth, unity, love. It is also very appropriate for this curious time. We all need love in the end. We simply cannot live without it! That’s why I chose this tulip. ”
There are also varieties of white and red tulips which will bear the name of fellow hosts Chantal Janzen and Jan Smit. It is the intention of the TPN that the participants and representatives of Eurovision 2021 will be surprised with bouquets of colourful tulips.
Edsilia took part in the baptism ceremony of the new “Edsilia” variety, and it will be immortalized in the International Cultivar Register of Tulip Names.
It is of no surprise that there would be a tulip-related element to the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. The Netherlands are famous all around the world for their tulip fields which see at least 7 million tulips bloom each year.
