Shay Healy, the songwriter of Ireland’s 1980 winning Eurovision song “What’s Another Year” has passed away.
Yesterday afternoon Shay Healy passed away at age 78. The songwriter and TV presenter was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004 but continued working. He began his career as a trainee cameraman at RTÉ, later moving on to presenting “Nighthawks” and founding his own production company.
Shay wrote the song “What’s Another Year”, which was performed at the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest by Johnny Logan. This brought Ireland its second win, as the song later reached number 1 in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Belgium.
Last year, as part of the Eurovision: Europe Shine A Light programme by the EBU, Johnny Logan performed the winning song alongside a choir of Eurovision fans from across the world.
The Eurovoix team would like to express our condolences to Shay’s family and friends at this difficult time.
