Swedish media is reporting that The Mamas and Dotter, the winners and runner up of Melodifestivalen 2020, are set to return for the 2021 contest. Further rumours for the 2021 competition include Jessica Andersson, Klara Hammarström and Alvaro Estrella.
After winning Melodifestivalen this year, The Mamas were originally supposed to represent Sweden at Eurovision 2020 with “Move” before the competition was cancelled. The group had previously stated that they would only return to Eurovision if directly selected by SVT. However, the trio have reportedly received several song proposals during the summer and have decided to enter Melodifestivalen again.
After losing out to the Mamas by just one point, Dotter is also reportedly returning to the competition in 2021. Her entry in 2020 “Bulletproof” narrowly missed out on victory and Aftonbladet is reporting that she has a song which will likely also be competitive in 2021.
Jessica Andersson participated in Eurovision in 2003 as part of the group Fame and has been a regular participant in Melodifestivalen since then as a solo artist, most recently with “Party Voice” in 2018. Her entry in 2021 is also rumored to be modern schlager pop in style.
Klara Hammarström debuted in Melodifestivalen in 2020 but failed to make the final with her entry “Nobody.” Klara is also known in Sweden due to her appearance in the SVT reality show Familjen Hammarström.
Finally, Alvaro Estrella who performed in the 2020 Melodifestivalen final with Mendez and their song “Vamos Amigos” is expected to return to the competition as a soloist in 2021. He previously participated in 2014 with the song “Bedroom” but did not make it past the Semi-Final stage. Alvaro also has experience as a backing singer and dancer at Eurovision including with Robin Bengtsson at the 2017 contest in Kyiv.
A full list of reported acts for 2021 is listed at Aftonbladet.
2,747 submissions were made to SVT for the 2021 event and it is expected that the names of the competing artists and songs will be confirmed in late November. Julia Alfrida is the first confirmed participant. She was selected by a jury as a wildcard from the P4 Nästa contest for new artists. Julia was one of eight acts to compete in the final of that contest in Västerås.
Melodifestivalen commences on 6 February 2021, but unlike in previous years will not tour across Sweden as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
