The Executive Producer of Melodifestivalen has revealed that the competitions format is set to be revamped for the 2022 edition.
Speaking to Dagens Nyheter, Anette Helenius explained that SVT is currently working on revamping the format of Melodifestivalen for 2022. The exact changes to the format have not been made public but are currently being developed by the Production team.
The last time that Melodifestivalen had a major change to its format was in 2002 when the competition was expanded to four semi-finals, a second chance round and a grand final.
Subsequent changes to the format have focused on introducing new talent into the competition. Previous versions of the contest have seen a web joker round to select an act, while currently one act from P4 Nästa is selected as a wildcard into the next years selection.

Sweden debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 and has gone on to be one of the contest’s most successful countries. The country has won the contest six times, the most recent being in 2015. Sweden’s first victory came in 1974 when ABBA won the contest in Brighton with “Waterloo”. Since missing out on the final in 2010, Sweden has gone on to finish 3rd twice and has won the contest twice, only in 2013 did the country place outside of the top 10 in the final.
