SVT has confirmed this evening that Melodifestivalen will not tour across the country in 2021.
Anette Helenius, project manager for the Melodifestivalen stated on SVT Nyheter that the 2021 edition of the contest will be staying in Stockholm for the run of six shows. She explained that:
It is too risky to do a tour. The purpose of traveling around Sweden is that we should be able to meet the audience. We will not be able to do that based on what we know today
Ms Helenius went on to explain that SVT has not yet selected a venue for Melodifestivalen, however the show will not be coming from a TV studio.
We will want to make great numbers and think that a regular TV studio is a little too small. At the same time, we do not want to be in a big arena with empty stands. A large room that is spacious enough is what we are looking for.
While SVT will be saving money on not travelling across the nation, the cost of the competition will now not be subsidised by local authorities. In past years local authorities have payed towards the cost of the show when hosting the competition for one weekend.
Melodifestivalen 2021 will commence on February 6, meaning the dates of the contest are as follows:
- Heat One – February 6
- Heat Two – February 13
- Heat Three – February 20
- Heat Four – February 27
- Second Chance – March 6
- Final – March 13
