“Catch If You Fall”, the latest song from Eurovision 2011 winner Eldar, was shortlisted as a potential entry for Eurovision 2020.
Eldar who won the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 has revealed that “Catch If You Fall” was shortlisted as a potential entry for Azerbaijan at the 2020 contest. The singer has revealed to Wiwibloggs that the song was one of around 700 songs that was submitted to iTV, with “Catch If You Fall” making it to the final shortlist.
The Eurovision winner revealed that when Efendi was selected as the Azerbaijani entrant for Eurovision that the song was subsequently ruled out. Eldar explained that the song was written from a male perspective and the style and sound of the song did not fit Efendi’s music.
Eldar has not ruled out attempting to return to Eurovision as a songwriter for Azerbaijan in the coming year.
Azerbaijan debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, they were represented by Elnur & Samir with the song “Day After Day”, they finished 8th in the final. In 2011 Azerbaijan won the Eurovision Song Contest represented by Ell & Nikki and their song “Running Scared”. The song scored a total of 221 points, receiving only three sets of 12 points from Malta, Russia and Turkey. In 2018 Azerbaijan failed to qualify for the final for the first time, having previously had a 100% qualification record.
