VRT will not be returning to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest this year.
Head of delegation for the Belgian broadcaster VRT, Birgit Simal, has confirmed that the broadcaster will not participate in the contest this year. RTBF, the Belgian broadcaster who shared Belgium’s participation in the contest with VRT during 2003 and 2006, have not yet ruled out participation.
Belgium took part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest from 2003 to 2012. From 2005 onwards, VRT were in charge of selecting their entries, due to lack of interest from Wallonia and RTBF. The country hosted the 2005 contest in the city of Hasselt, hosted by Maureen Louys and Marcel Vanthilt at the Ethias Arena. Their best entry came from Laura Omloop and her song “Zo verliefd (Yodelo)”, which finished in 4th position at the 2009 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine.
To date, the following countries have confirmed participation in the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Poland:
- Georgia
- Ireland
- Italy
- Netherlands
- Poland
- Russia
- Spain
- Ukraine
