LRT the Lithuanian public broadcaster has decided to give The Roop a place in the final of Pabandom iš naujo 2021.
The Lithuanian national broadcaster has opted to give The Roop a direct place in the final of the nations selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. The Roop had been selected to represent Lithuania at Eurovision 2020 with “On Fire”, before the competition was cancelled.
Eurovision is first and foremost a Song Contest, which is gaining popularity every year in Lithuania, stimulating the creation of new songs and performances, thus attracting many who wish to try their hand at music producers and performers. We were looking for a solution to not deprive them of this opportunity, and at the same time not to deprive The Roop.
As a result, we have made a somewhat non-standard decision – we will be preparing for a new national selection, and The Roop will be nominated to appear in its finals.
LRT has also announced that the group will receive 21,300 Euro, the funds raised by the televote in the national selection. Gytis Oganauskas, Deputy Director General of LRT explained:
We understand that the group has already invested a lot of time and money in this, so we also decided to transfer to the group the voting funds that were to be used to prepare for the big Eurovision.
LRT confirmed that the broadcaster will be working with the European Broadcasting Union to help honour the artists who were due to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
Lithuania debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, however on their debut they finished in last place with nul points. Lithuania didn’t return to the contest until 1999 when Aiste finished 20th with the song “Strazdas”. Lithuania’s best result came in 2006 when LT United performed “We Are The Winners”; they finished 6th in the final with a total of 162 points. Lithuania’s only other top 10 finish came in 2016 when Donny Montell performed “I’ve Been Waiting For This Night” in Stockholm, he received 12 points from the public in Ireland, Norway & United Kingdom.
