The Director General of RTVSLO has revealed the European Broadcasting Union’s plan B for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
Speaking today Natalija Gorscak the Director General of the Slovenian national broadcaster has revealed the European Broadcasting Union’s plan B, should the Eurovision Song Contest be unable to be held in Rotterdam. She explained that:
At EBU, they are preparing as if Eurovision will be, I am personally in touch with management who has a plan B, which suggests that we will become more involved.
In Slovenia, this is supposed to be in the studio. If this scenario were to be implemented, each member would rotate their recording, then probably someone would link it. That’s what they’re thinking. They are still talking about everything, but in principle they are acting as if Rotterdam were.
The EBU released a statement earlier today confirming that working on the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 is continuing, the statement reads:
The EBU is closely monitoring the situation concerning the spread of the coronavirus and keeping abreast of the latest advice and guidelines from the WHO and national health authorities.
We are working closely with Dutch Host Broadcasters NPO, NOS and AVROTROS and the City of Rotterdam to explore different potential scenarios for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
However, with 2 months to go until the 3 live shows on 12, 14 and 16 May, and a rapidly changing situation both in the Netherlands and the countries of the participating broadcasters, it is still too early to make any final decisions.
With this in mind, we’re continuing to work together as a team on preparations to host the 65th Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam.
The Mayor of Rotterdam has stated that yesterday evening that it is currently too early to determine whether to cancel the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. He told Dutch press that:
The EBU and AVROTROS have the opportunity to take this decision independently, but I have the legal responsibility and I think it is too early to say anything about it
