AVROTROS has revealed that a 5 meter high semi-transparent LED will form part of the stage for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
A 22 meter wider and 5 meter high semi-transparent LED for the B stage of this years contest. The LED screen means that the secondary stage can be used more effectively by the participating artists and encourages artists to venture out from the main stage.
Another important feature of the screen is that due to it being semi-transparent the audience behind will still be able to see the performance. Once a performance has ended and the screen is not used it will be raised up out of view of viewers and the audience in the Ahoy Arena.
The stage design has been created by Florian Wieder, who has created the stages for the contest in years such as 2011, 2015 and 2019 contest in Tel Aviv, Israel. Florian Wieder explained:
I was inspired by the unique characteristics of Dutch Design. Based on that, I wanted to create an unconventional, minimalist and modern concept for next year’s show. I am very happy that the Dutch public broadcaster has been so open minded and has enthusiastically embraced this design. As far as I’m concerned, this is a new chapter in stage design, a wish I have had for a long time.
The design shows the connection between the sky, the sea and the land. The horizon links these elements and that horizon will work as a window to open up the world of Eurovision 2020. The floor plan of the stage is inspired by the canals and bridges that connect land and water in the Netherlands. With this design, we want to bring the artists as close as possible to the audience.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 takes place in the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on the 12th, 14th and 16th of May. The Netherlands won the right to host the competition following their win in 2019 with Duncan Laurence and the song “Arcade”.
