Ahead of next weeks Junior Eurovision Song Contest, Eurovoix.com talks to Sophia Ivanko from Ukraine, who will sing “The Spirit of Music”.
What was your reaction when you found out that you would be representing Ukraine this year?
I was absolutely impressed. I was jumping around my room and screaming, while my mother was crying.
You were mentored by Jamala when you took part in The Voice Kids. How was to be mentored by a Eurovision winner?
Being mentored by Jamala has given me motivation and faith that the victory is possible. The fate has given me a chance to meet her. Otherwise I would not have written The Spirit of Music.
What was the inspiration behind your song “The Spirit of Music”?
I was inspired by Jamala’s style, meeting her, the magical atmosphere around her and, generally, her creativity. Also, my life circumstances inspired me, of course.
Darina Krasnovetska (Ukraine 2018) and Timur Miroshnychenko (presenter of JESC 2009 and 2013) both appear in your music video. Have they given you any advice for the contest?
Darina and Timur have certainly given me advice. Most importantly, they told me not to worry. Also, Darina said that Junior Eurovision takes much effort but is lots of fun.
Who is your idol?
My idols are bands Korn and Merlin Manson, singers Melani Martinez, Darina Krasnovetska and, of course, Jamala.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
There are only you and your story on the stage, sing with your heart.
Thanks to UA:PBC for assisting with interviewing Sophia Ivanko ahead of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Gliwice-Silesia, Poland on November 24.
