DR, the Danish national broadcaster, has announced that the submission window for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020 is now open.
As in previous years, ten entries will compete in the final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020. However, DR will only select seven of these entries directly. The remaining three will be chosen by the public through DR P4 radio. DR will select nine songs to be played on P4 throughout January 2020. The song will be voted on by the listeners, with the top three advancing to the final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. The seven entries that were directly selected by DR to go to the final will also be released around the same time.
Gustav Lützhøft, Head of Radio at DR has explained that this new method of selection is a way of getting the public prepared for the national final:
“In this way we hope that we can create an even bigger party when it is time for the show itself.”
Lützhøft has also clarified that DR are looking for “musical breadth” for Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020 and are aiming for songs that celebrate the variety in Danish popular music. “7 Years” by Lukas Graham, “For evigt” by Volbeat and “Kun for mig” by Medina were all cited by DR as examples of Danish succesful songs of recent years that reflect this variety.
Anyone looking to submit entries for the contest can do so from now until November 1. The final of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix will be held on March 7 in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen.
Leonora represented Denmark in Tel Aviv with “Love Is Forever”. She finished 12th in the final with 102 points.

Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest
Denmark debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957 alongside Austria and the United Kingdom. To date Denmark has won the contest on three occasions, the first being in 1963 when Grethe & Jorgen Ingmann performed “Dansevise”. Denmark won the contest again in 2000 represented by the Olsen Brothers, their most recent victory came in 2013 when Emmelie de Forest performed “Only Teardrops”. Denmark failed to qualify for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 and 2016.
