Hooverphonic will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam. They are the first Eurovision 2020 participant to be revealed.
Hooverphonic was revealed as the Belgian representative this evening on Vandaag and through a livestream on één’s official Facebook page. Hooverphonic were internally selected by VRT to represent Belgium in Rotterdam.
The act has already selected their entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, and only agreed to taking part in the contest because of the song. Their entry will be revealed at a later date.
About Hooverphonic
Hooverphonic were formed in 1995 and is formed of Alex Callier, Raymond Geerts and Luka Cruysberghs. Luka is the lead vocalist for the group and joined Hooverphonic in 2018. They have released ten studio albums during their career, and had a European hit in 2000 with “Mad About You”.
VRT opted again to select their artist for the Eurovision Song Contest before the song that represents them. This was the case in 2018 when VRT selected Sennek for the Eurovision Song Contest, before then choosing her song.
Eliot represented Belgium in the first Semi-Final of Eurovision 2019. The singer performed “Wake Up” on stage, however failed to qualify for the Grand Final. This was the second year running that Belgium failed to qualify for the final.
Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest
Belgium was one of the original seven nations to participate in the first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. To date, the country has won the contest only once in 1986. Sandra Kim won the contest with the song “J’aime la vie”, her victory was not without controversy when it emerged that Sandra was just 13 years old, two years younger than the age restriction at the time. In the late 00s, Belgium struggled in the contest failing to reach the final annually from 2005 until 2010, when Tom Dice finished 6th in the final with 143 points. Belgium has finished last at the contest six times, including two sets of nul points.
