The upcoming Netflix comedy film Eurovision starring Will Ferrell will be filming in Edinburgh, Scotland next month.
It is expected that the film will be shot in the Scottish capital for a week in early October and filming will feature up to 200 extras. The film will star Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as aspiring Icelandic musicians alongside Pierce Brosnan as “the most handsome man in Iceland.”
Demi Lovato is expected to join the cast in the role of Katiana, one of the most angelic singers in Iceland and Dan Stevens will play a Russian Eurovision contestant in the film. It is not known which of the actors will travel to Edinburgh for filming.
In Edinburgh, filming will take place in the city’s Old Town, New Town and Newhaven lighthouse on the waterfront.
Filming for Eurovision comes shortly after Fast and Furious 9 finished filming in Edinburgh. Other Hollywood productions filmed in the city include Avengers: Infinity War and Cloud Atlas.
Rosie Ellison, head of Film Edinburgh, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the city to be showcased to millions of both film and Eurovision fans around the world, and allows us to once again demonstrate our film-friendly credentials to the global film industry.”
Edinburgh hosted the Eurovision Song Contest itself in 1972 following Monaco’s win in 1971. The principality was unable to host the event and so the BBC stepped in and chose Edinburgh as the venue. That year’s contest was won by Vicky Leandros for Luxembourg. More recently, the Eurovision Young Musicans contest was held in Edinburgh in 2018.
Filming for the Netflix project commenced in 2018 during the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, and continued a few months ago in Tel Aviv during the 2019 edition. Additional filming is expected to take place in London and in Húsavík, Iceland in the upcoming months.
The director of the project is David Dobkin who also directed Wedding Crashers, which featured McAdams.
