Azerbaijan will participate in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Azerbaijan’s national broadcaster, Ictimai, have confirmed that they will take part in the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It hasn’t yet been revealed how they will select their entry, however they have opted for internal selections recently.
Chingiz finished 8th in the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 for Azerbaijan. The singer who performed “Truth” in Tel Aviv, brought Azerbaijan their best result in the competition since 2013.
The Eurovision Song Contest will be brought back to the Netherlands for the 2020 edition after Duncan Laurence’s victory at the 2019 contest with his song “Arcade”. To date, 34 countries have confirmed preliminary participation. These countries are:
- Czech Republic
- North Macedonia
- San Marino
- United Kingdom
Azerbaijan debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, they were represented by Elnur & Samir with the song “Day After Day”, they finished 8th in the final. In 2011 Azerbaijan won the Eurovision Song Contest represented by Ell & Nikki and their song “Running Scared”. The song scored a total of 221 points, receiving only three sets of 12 points from Malta, Russia and Turkey. In 2018 Azerbaijan failed to qualify for the final for the first time, having previously had a 100% qualification record.
