Belarus will participate in the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in the Netherlands.
Last year we reported that Belarus were planning to change the way in which they select their Eurovision entry in 2020. Belarusian broadcaster BTRC has recently confirmed their participation in the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest to ESCToday, however it’s still not certain how their entrant will be selected.
This year, the country held a national final consisting of an auditions round, and a live televised final which consisted of 10 songs. However, it’s speculated that the broadcaster is going to stop holding an open national selection for the 2020 edition of the contest. In doing so, this would allow the broadcaster to “create a shortlist of potential entries and continue working on them, in order to bring them as close to perfection as possible”.
Belarus was represented by Zena at the 2019 contest in Tel Aviv. With her song “Like It”, she finished in 24th place in the final.
Belarus debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 and has made it to the final on five occasions. Belarus’ best result in the contest came in 2007 when Dmitry Koldun finished 6th in the final with a total of 145 points. In total Belarus has qualified for the Eurovision final five times in fifteen attempts.
