The five candidate host cities for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest have been reduced to just two.
The EBU has revealed that Rotterdam and Maastricht are the two cities remaining in the Eurovision 2020 host city battle. After much consideration, the selection committee chose to leave Arnhem, Den Bosch and Utrecht as they move on to the next stage. Both Maastricht and Rotterdam have produced the strongest bids, according to the EBU, who state that they offer “the right facilities to organize both the television show as well as the side-events like the Eurovision Village, EuroClub and the Opening Ceremony.”
Sietse Bakker, Executive Producer of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, said:
“All the cities and venues have put a lot of effort into their bids. We were impressed with all the proposals and would like to thank everyone involved so far for their positive input and commitment. We are convinced Maastricht and Rotterdam offer everything that a Host City requires. We are hoping the other cities will maintain their enthusiasm for the Song Contest. We’d love to discuss in the coming months how we can involve them in the event next year.”
How the Bidding Process Works
At the start of June the cities or regions that express interest received a document from the broadcasters which outlined the full criteria that needs to be met should they be selected. This forms the foundation for each interested bid.
Those cities or regions still in the running have four weeks to create their “bid books” which will then need to be submitted at the start of July.
During July, the organisers will then have the option of visiting those cities and regions in the running. Following the assessments, the host city for the 2020 contest will then be chosen with consultation from the EBU. The host city will then be announced during August.
The Eurovision Song Contest will be brought back to the Netherlands for the 2020 edition after Duncan Laurence’s victory at the 2019 contest with his song “Arcade”. To date, 26 countries have confirmed preliminary participation. These countries are:
- Czech Republic
- San Marino
- United Kingdom
