Romania saw less than 150,000 viewers tune in to the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, as viewer interest falls for another year.
TVR saw a total of 147,000 viewers follow the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, the lowest reported audience to date for a final in Romania. The show was only the 8th most watched television broadcast on Saturday night, and is the second year running that viewer interest has fallen in the country. Last year 158,000 viewers followed the Grand Final live from Lisbon, Portugal on TVR1.
Viewing figures for Eurovision 2019 in Romania were as follows:
- Semi-Final One – 106,000 viewers – 1.6% share
- Semi-Final Two – 184,000 viewers – 3% share
- Grand Final – 147,000 viewers – 3.3% share
Who is Ester Peony?
Ester Alexandra Crețu known professionally as Ester Peony was born in 1994 in Campulung, Romania. At the early age of 7 years old her parents immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 2001 where Peony spent only 4 years. She relocated to Romania after that and started writing music for artists before getting recognition, in 2014 she released her first single called “Cuminte de Crăciun”. She obtained recognition for her YouTube covers in 2015 which earned her a deal with a very popular record label, Cat Music to which she is now signed.

Romania first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, the country had tried to participate in 1993 but failed to get through the pre-qualifying round. At the 1994 contest Dan Bittman finished 21st in the final scoring 14 points, Romania didn’t make it through to another final until 1998. Romania’s best results in the contest are two third place finishes. In 2005 Luminita Anghel & Sistem finished 3rd scoring 158 points, while Paula Seling & Ovi finished 3rd in Oslo with the song “Playing with Fire”. Romania missed the 2016 contest due to TVR being removed from the EBU.
