Utrecht joins the list of cities wishing to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in the Netherlands.
The Mayor of Utrecht, Jan van Zanen, has stated that the city will put in a bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. Mr van Zanen told RTV Utrecht that:
We have not started yet, but if there is even a 1 percent chance, we must go for it
The Mayor argues that Utrecht is the centre of the Netherlands and has shown itself to be capable of hosting large scale international events in the past. He went on to add last night that he texted the Dutch Prime Minister during the broadcast last night to state that his city was interested in hosting Eurovision 2020.
Utrecht’s potential venue would be the Jaarbeurs. The Director of Marketing for the Jaarbeurs, told RTV Utrecht that the Jaarbeurs wants to work with the local municipality on any bid, adding:
We have good contact with Mayor Jan van Zanen about this, our ambitions are in line with each other
Any potential bid from Utrecht to host Eurovision 2020, has also received the backing of a number of local parties.
Duncan Laurence won the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song “Arcade”. After 44 years of waiting the Netherlands took victory scoring a total of 492 points.
