Ivan Eismont the Head of the Belarusian broadcaster has explained that the televote was removed from the national selection at the request of participants.
Speaking on Belarus 1, the Head of BTRC, Ivan Eismont has countered claims that the winner of the Belarusian selection for Eurovision 2019 was pre-determiined. Mr Eismont explained that the decision to remove the televote from the selection was at the request of the participants:
At the request of the artists and producers, we remove the telephone vote, which they themselves used to wind up, it was a vicious circle and they did not cope with it.
Mr Eismont went on to explain that:
Authoritative people were called, with education, with absolute pitch, some celebrities, Koldun was there. We reminded them again what the President told on this occasion: “Guys, close your eyes and think who would you like to see from our country at Eurovision”
ZENA won the Belarusian national selection with the song “Like It”, she scored a total of 69 out of a maximum 70 points from the jury. The winner of the selection was entirely determined by jury voting with BTRC opting to drop the public televote.
Belarus debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 and has made it to the final on five occasions. Belarus’ best result in the contest came in 2007 when Dmitry Koldun finished 6th in the final with a total of 145 points. In total Belarus has qualified for the Eurovision final five times in fifteen attempts.
