Zena has revealed to BTRC that she approached straight after hosting Junior Eurovision with a song to compete with at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Speaking in a web chat on Monday, Zena has revealed how she ended up competing in the Belarusian national selection process for Eurovision 2019. Zena explained that after hosting the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2018 she was approached by a songwriter with the idea of competing in Eurovision.
The songwriter Yulia Kireeva, then worked with Zena to create a song that would be suitable for Eurovision. Zena explained that:
this song was written specially for this contest. We took into account all sorts of little things that I like, I do not like. Considered my range – very large. All the details reviewed, edited and turned out such a wonderful song
Zena added that she was involved in the entire process of crating “Like It” and suggested and made changes to the song where appropriate. She went on to explain that she never have gone to the contest with a song off the shelf. Zena feels that to give a genuine performance she has to have a connection to the song.
ZENA won the Belarusian national selection with the song “Like It”, she scored a total of 69 out of a maximum 70 points from the jury. The winner of the selection was entirely determined by jury voting with BTRC opting to drop the public televote.
Belarus debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 and has made it to the final on five occasions. Belarus’ best result in the contest came in 2007 when Dmitry Koldun finished 6th in the final with a total of 145 points.
