Czech Republic: Televised Selection To Determine Eurovision 2020 Entry

Ceska Televize is set to return to a televised selection process in 2020, twelve years on from the last time the broadcaster used this selection method.

The Czech Republic has confirmed their participation in Eurovision 2020, by confirming the return of a televised selection process. At the reveal of Lake Malawi as the Czech entrant for Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv, Ceska Televize will hold a live televised selection show to determine the nations participant in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Czech Republic returned to a national selection process in 2018, with an online selection being held with the use of app voting and an international jury. Since returning to the contest in 2015, the broadcaster had previously internally selected both the singer and song that would represent the Czech Republic in the contest.

The Czech Republic last held televised selections for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 and 2008. In both years the nation failed to make it through to the final, before in 2009 the broadcaster dropped a televised selection.

The Czech Republic is being represented by Lake Malawi in Tel Aviv with the song “Friend of a Friend”. Lake Malawi are a Czech indie-pop band founded by lead singer Albert Černý in 2013. The group consists of Albert as well as Jeroným Šubrt on bass and keys and Antonín Hrabal and Pavel Palát both on drums.

The Czech Republic debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 with the band Kabát and the song “Malá dáma”, they finished last in the semi-final scoring just 1 point from Estonia. The country went on to participate for a further two years before withdrawing from the contest after the 2009 edition in Moscow where scored nul points. In 2016 the Czech Republic qualified for their first final, Gabriela Gunčíková finished 25th in the final with the song “I Stand”.
