Husniye Maharramova has returned to the role of Head of Delegation for Azerbaijan at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Husniye Maharramova has been revealed as the Azerbaijani Head of Delegation for Eurovision 2019. Ms Maharramova is returning to the role having previously been in the role between 2012 and 2014. Husinye not only took on the role of Head of Delegation, but was also the presenter of the Azerbaijani selection shows during this time.
Speaking to CVN TV yesterday, Ms Maharramova confirmed that iTV has not yet made a decision on the act that will represent Azerbaijan at Eurovision 2019. She explained that a jury will select the singer, but that for her the most important factor would be the energy of the singer and how the deal with nerves. She also stated that previous reports in the Azerbaijani media that Samira Afandiyeva, Tofig Hajiyev and Araz Humbatli had been shortlisted were not correct.
Aisel represented Azerbaijan at the 2018 contest in Lisbon, Portugal. However, she failed to qualify for the final with her song “X My Heart”, finishing 11th. She was 14 points away from qualification, and this was the first time the country failed to make it to the final.
Azerbaijan debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, they were represented by Elnur & Samir with the song “Day After Day”, they finished 8th in the final. In 2011 Azerbaijan won the Eurovision Song Contest represented by Ell & Nikki and their song “Running Scared”. The song scored a total of 221 points, receiving only three sets of 12 points from Malta, Russia and Turkey. In 2018 Azerbaijan failed to qualify for the final for the first time, having previously had a 100% qualification record.
