Belarus: MIHAI Joins National Selection For Eurovision 2019

The former Romanian Eurovision participant will take part in the Belarusian national selection process for Eurovision 2019.

We recently reported that Mihai Trăistariu (often known simply as MIHAI) has withdrawn from Romania’s selection for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. He has previously been involved in the competition nine times including one victory in 2006, when he went on to represent his country in Athens with Tornero. He finished in 4th place behind eventual winners Lordi.

This year, the singer is adopting a different approach by entering Belarus’ selection, according to His entry is expected to be the song Baya:

MIHAI withdrew the song from Selecţia Naţională in Romania in protest at changes made to the rules of the competition by the broadcaster, TVR. Following the announcement of all of the participants, two later wildcard entries were introduced:

In response, on Facebook, MIHAI said:

Because, at this point, I no longer trust the objectivity of the organisers of the Selectia Nationala, given the unclear situation, in the start, with regard to the contestants enrolled – those who passed the pre-selection and those who were subsequently favoured – I decided to I withdraw.

Last year, MIHAI finished seventh in the Romanian competition but called into question the validity of the event’s televoting. At the time, he suggested he was considering participating for a different country in 2019.

The Belarusian selection for Eurovision 2019 will take place on March 8th.  The initial submissions window will close on 31 January and will be followed by a “live auditions” stage. Ten acts will compete in the grand final where the winner will be determined by a jury only.
