Israel’s search for their Eurovision 2019 artist continued tonight with the twentieth show of HaKokhav HaBa L’Eurovizion 2019. Twenty participants remain in the contest, but only twelve can qualify for the next round. The qualifiers will be decided by the members of the jury.

  • Liat Eliyahu – 51%
  • Shefita – 41%

Changes have been announced for the latest season of the competition. For the first time the song that will be performed at Eurovision will also be selected as part of the show. Three programs will be broadcast on KAN to determine the song that will represent Israel on home soil in 2019. Furthermore an additional spin off show will be held for the competition. KAN will hold an additional show to select one singer to go through to the final of HaKokhav HaBa L’Eurovizion.

This is the first time that both Keshet 12 and KAN have both held shows to determine the Israeli participant for the contest. Previously Keshet had selected the Israeli participant while the Israeli public broadcaster internally selected the song that the singer would perform.

Israel debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973, and were represented by Ilanit who finished in 4th place with the song “Ey Sham”. Their first victory came in 1978 with Izar Cohen and the Alphabeta. Israel won again the following year with Gali Atari & Milk and Honey. Israel’s third victory came in 1998 when Dana International performed “Diva” in Birmingham, beating Malta to victory in a tense voting sequence. Israel struggled in the contest during the early-2010s, failing to qualify for the final from 2011-2014. However since the HaKokhav HaBa selection process was introduced in 2015 Israel has seen its fortunes turned around. In 2018 Netta won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Toy”, the song has gone on to be the most viewed Eurovision entry of all time on YouTube.
