The fourth competitive gala of Operación Triunfo took place last night. The two nominated contestants sang to stay in the Academy while the remaining 12 contestants aimed to avoid being nominated by the jury.
Joining the jury as a guest judge this week was singer-songwriter David Otero. The guest performers this week were Mon Laferte and Álvaro Soler, the latter of whom performed with the contestants.
Last week’s nominated contestants, Damion and Joan Garrido, each had to perform a song of their choice. Damion chose “Give Me Reason” by Ed Sheeran while Joan Garrido chose “Bed I Made” by Allen Stone. With 65% of the public vote, Damion was saved while Joan Garrido became the third contestant to be expelled from the Operación Triunfo Academy.
After Joan Garrido’s elimination, the remaining 13 contestants (including Damion) were evaluated by the jury.
The performances by the contestants who were not nominated last week were as follows:
- Dave and Julia – “Vivir” (Rozalén feat. Estopa)
- Marilia and Marta – “Lo echamos a suertes” (Ella Baila Sola)
- Hozier – “Take Me to Church” (Hozier)
- María and Miki – “Quédate en Madrid” (Mecano)
- Carlos Right and Sabela -“Estrella polar” (Pereza)
- Noelia – “La tormenta” (Pastora Soler)
- Alba Reche and Natalia – “Toxic” (Britney Spears)
María was voted favourite of the week by the public and was safe from nomination. The jury chose to nominate Dave, Sabela, Carlos Right and Noelia. The Academy staff chose to save Noelia and the contestants chose to save Sabela. Dave and Carlos Right were nominated and one of them will leave during next week’s gala.
A Eurovision Gala of Operación Triunfo will be held in January to select the Spanish representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. Any of the 16 contestants that entered the Academy can be selected for Eurovision, regardless of whether or not they have been expelled before then.
Amaia y Alfred were selected through last year’s edition to represent Spain in Lisbon. They finished 23rd in the final with a total of 61 points, following their performance of “Tu canción”.
