Bernice Sammut Attard’s Eurovision Young Musicians journey is underway as the 18 years old musician departs for the contest.
The Maltese representative at Eurovision Young Musicians 2018 has left for Edinburgh this afternoon. 18 years old Bernice Sammut Attard will be representing Malta alongside 17 other young musicians from across Europe at the 19th edition of Eurovision Young Musicians. She told TVM at the Malta International Airport that;
I have been preparing for this a long time, almost my whole life you can say, and I am truly honoured to be representing Malta on Saturday in Edinburgh,
Bernice has been spending hours per day rehearsing for the competition and is looking forward to taking to the stage on Saturday.
I will be performing four different pieces, one by Poulenc, two by Rachmaninoff and one by Chopin. They are all pieces which I enjoy very much. Are they difficult? Yes, obviously they are, but I love all these works ย so I am feeling really happy that I will be able to perform them on such an important platform.
Malta will be opening this years competition, with Bernice performing first in the first semi-final. She will be playing;
- Poulenc โ Toccata from Trois piรจces
- Rachmaninov โ Prelude in C minor, Op. 23 No. 7; Prelude in G sharp minor Op. 32 No. 12
- Chopin โ Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 31
The semi-finals are split in to six shows spread over two days. In each of the six shows, three musicians will be performing for a total of 18 minutes each. The semi-final allocation and the compositions that they will perform are as follows. After the semi-finals six young musicians will be selected to perform in the final on August 23.

Eurovision Young Musicians has been held bi-annually since 1982. The contest was based on the format of The BBC Young Musician of the Year in the United Kingdom. Performers in the contest must be aged under 18 years and are selected by their participating broadcaster. Each performer performs a piece of classical music of their choice accompanied by the local orchestra. The winner is decided by a jury made up of classical music experts and talents.
