The Head of KAN has stated that the broadcaster may be forced to relinquish their right to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.
Ynet reports that the Head of the Israeli national broadcaster has appealed to the Israeli Prime Minister to ensure the nation can host Eurovision 2019, otherwise the broadcast may relinquish its right to host the competition as early as tomorrow.
IPBC in currently required by the European Broadcasting Union to deposit a €12 Million guarantee in to an EBU bank account in Switzerland. The guarantee is required by the EBU to ensure that there is a financial penalty should a host nation state during the latter stages of preparations that they are unable to host. The EBU has given IPBC until August 14 to deposit the required amount.
Mr Omer wrote;
For the past two weeks, I have been making great efforts to inform the decision makers of the obstacles we face in order to make every effort to resolve them.” In various letters I sent during this period, I noted that we see great importance in the competition in Israel, Both from the image and the economic point of view. “Unfortunately, our repeated requests for intensive work to solve the major problems that stand in the way of competition in Israel have not been answered
The Ministry of Finance is currently refusing to provide the money required to pay the guarantee. Should the Ministry of Finance not provide the money required the broadcaster has stated it will be required to let go of over 200 members of staff or cut back on its original productions.
Should Israel be forced to withdraw their right to host the competition, the EBU will be required to approach other members of the broadcasting union to host the competition. Austria who finished 3rd in Lisbon, Portugal has been strongly favored as the most likely nation to host the 2019 contest should Israel be unable to.
