The Israeli national broadcaster KAN has launched a tender for broadcasters and production companies wishing to partner on Israel’s Eurovision 2019 selection.
KAN has today issued a tender for broadcasters and production companies to produce the Israeli selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. The broadcaster has for a fifth year opted to have the Israeli national selection broadcast and produced by a channel other than itself.
The main criteria outlined by KAN in the tender is;
- The show must be broadcast over a number of months in a prime time slot
- The selection of the Israeli artist must be completed by January 2019
- The selected channel must produce a variety of content with the selection promoted over multiple platforms
KAN is also looking for potential broadcasters to commit to supplementary programming around the selection process. While not explicitly stating what this content should be, it is thought that KAN wishes to see documentaries and talk/panel shows based around the selection process.
It is expected that Keshet who have produced Next Star for Eurovision for the past four years will be one of the channels to bid for the Israeli selection process. Next Star has turned around Israeli fortunes in the Eurovision Song Contest with the nation qualifying for the final every year since it was first introduced in 2015.
Reshet is also speculated as a potential bidder for the selection process. The channel currently holds the rights to The X Factor Israel and has reportedly been in contact with KAN about turning the show in to the Israeli selection process for 2019.
The decision to outsource the selection process to other broadcasters has been criticised by figures in Israeli television as the Eurovision Song Contest has brought in some of the channels largest and most diverse audiences. However according to sources who spoke with Walla from KAN, the channel does not have the budget or resource to put in to a multi month selection.
