Xavier Mujal, the director general of the Andorran national broadcaster, RTVA, has confirmed that Andorra will not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 or any other Eurovision events for the foreseeable future.
In an interview with eurofestivales.com, Mister Mujal stated:
“We will not participate in Eurovision 2019 or in any other EBU event. This is related to the participation costs and the logistics for each contest, which are very big for a small company like ours.”
Mister Mujal also confirmed that RTVA is not considering returning to the Eurovision Song Contest in the short or medium term because of the previously stated reasons.
Andorra is the only country to have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest to have never competed in the Grand Final. They debuted in the contest in 2004 and participated annually until 2009.
During this period of time, Andorra came close to qualifying in 2007 when only one semi-final was held. Andorra was represented by Anonymous and the song “Salvem el món”, they finished 12th just 11 points short of qualifying.
Andorra have not taken part in any other Eurovision events. They did, however, broadcast the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006.
