Christabelle has traveled to Slovenia, following her first Eurovision promotional appearance in Moscow, Russia over the past weekend.
Christabelle has appeared on Vikend paket alongside this years Slovenian Eurovision participant Lea Sirk. The singer who will represent Malta in Lisbon, made her way to Slovenia to promote her song “Taboo”. She told RTVSLO that;
I believe that perseverance is the key to success. If I did not sign up for Eurovision I would never have the opportunity to present to the public a song that means a lot to me. Every year when I attended Malta Eurovision I gained some experience and learned something. Since I was well prepared for the competition, I did not feel too much pressure on my re-registration
She stated about Lea Sirk that;
I think Lea is a wonderful girl. I looked at her performance and I must say that the lyrics of her song seem extremely powerful and important. Sometimes it’s simply necessary to say: Thank you, no!”
Christabelle’s entry for Malta, Taboo addresses the theme of mental health and was written by the singer alongside Johnny Sanchez, Muzu and Thomas G:son.
Christabelle won the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in a final against 15 other songs with a total of 133 points. She follows Claudia Faniello as the Maltese Eurovision representative. In 2017, Claudia finished in 16th place in her semi-final in Kyiv with Breathlessly.
Malta debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 and was represented by Joe Grech and the song “Marija L-Maltija”, which finished last. Malta competed again in 1972 and 1975 but then withdrew until their return in 1991. During the 1990s Malta only once finished outside of the top 10, and in 1998 they came within just 7 points of victory. It was Chiara who brought the country their 3rd place finish in 1998, and who went on to finish in 2nd at the 2005 contest in Kyiv. The only other artist to finish 2nd for Malta is Ira Losco, who was 12 points away from victory in 2002. They are the most successful country never to have won the Eurovision Song Contest.
