The next artists featured in our “Who Is” series for the Eurovision 2018 season are Jessika and Jenifer Brening from San Marino.
At the beginning of March, it was decided that Jessika ft. Jenifer Brening would represent San Marino at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest after they won 1in360. Let’s get to know a bit more about them.
Jessika Muscat was born on 27th February 1989 in Mosta, Malta. She is known for her singing, songwriting, and acting in her home country of Malta, and was discovered as a musician when she took part in the Malta Song for Europe festival with her song “Tangled” in 2008. Over the course of her career, she has taken part in many festivals and competitions, notably placing 2nd in the Malta Hit Song Festival in 2008, and 2nd place for Best Performer at the International Discovery Festival in Bulgaria.
Jessika is no stranger to Eurovision selection shows, as she has participated in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest a total of 7 times in the past before trying to represent San Marino this year. Her highest placing at MESC was 7th in 2016 with her song “The Flame”.
Accompanying Jessika on stage is Jenifer Brening, who was born on 15th December 1996 in Berlin, Germany. The singer and rapper has been in the music industry since 2013, releasing covers of songs onto YouTube and writing her own songs. Her first single “Not That Guy” was released in 2013, and a year later she won an EMMAward for “Best Newcomer 2014”. Since then, she has released many singles and remixes.
The pair were chosen to represent San Marino after they took part in the Eurovision selection show 1in360, which was used to discover talent from around the world. They will participate at the Eurovision Song Contest in May with their song “Who We Are”.
Over 9 years of participation San Marino have only once qualified for the Eurovision final when Valentina Monetta represented the country with “Maybe (Forse)” in Copenhagen. She finished in 24th place with 14 points, San Marino’s best result to date. This year Valentina represented her country for the 4th time, this time joined on stage by American singer Jimmie Wilson. The pair’s entry “Spirit of the Night” finished in last place in its semi-final in Kyiv, scoring just 1 point.
