The next artist featured in our “Who Is” series for the Eurovision 2018 season is Lea Sirk from Slovenia.
In February, it was decided that Lea Sirk will represent Slovenia in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest after she won the Slovenian national selection show. Let’s get to know a bit more about her.
Lea Sirk was born on 1st September 1989 in Koper, Slovenia. Lea had been interested in music from a young age, as she began learning how to play the flute at five years old. She professionally began her career in 2006 as a singer and songwriter and released her first single “Povej mi, kdaj” a year later. She went on to release many other singles throughout her career, as well as her album “Roža”.
Lea is no stranger to Eurovision, as she has attempted to represent Slovenia three times before her most recent successful attempt. She first took part in EMA 2009, where she placed 9th in the final with her song “Znamenje iz sanj”. She took part a year later, finishing 10th with “Vampir je moj poet”. In 2017, she participated with her song “Freedom” but failed to qualify from the semi-final. She also performed as a backing singer for Tinkara in 2014 at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Lea Sirk will represent Slovenia at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal this May. She was selected after she took part in EMA 2018, winning with her song “Hvala, ne!”.
Slovenia was one of three countries to join the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993. The country qualified through a specially organised selection round called “Kvalifikacija za Millstreet” which was hosted in Slovenia, seven countries competed for three spots in Eurovision 1993. The country has participated in 22 editions of the Eurovision Song Contest. Their best result came in 1995 when Darja Švajger finished 7th scoring a total of 84 points, she is closely followed by Nuša Derenda who finished 7th in the 2001 contest with 70 points.
