The next artist featured on our “Who Is” series for the Eurovision 2018 season in Mélovin from Ukraine.

In February, it was decided that Mélovin would represent Ukraine after he won their national final show Vidbir 2018. Let’s get to know a bit more about him.

Kostyantyn Mykolayovych Bocharov (Mélovin) was born on 11th April 1997 in Odessa, Ukraine. His interest in music came about at a young age as he participated in many concerts at his school, and later he graduated from theatre school. Mélovin came into the public eye when he participated in X-Factor Ukraine in 2015, which he went on to win. Afterwards, he toured Ukraine with the show’s other finalists, and a year later he released his first single “Ne odinokaya”.

Mélovin is no stranger to Eurovision selection shows, as he participated in Vidbir 2017 with his song “Wonder”. He ended up placing third in the Final, receiving the highest amount of televote points but placing second-to-last with the jury. A year later he participated once again, this time placing first. This time around he received the highest amount of televote points and second-highest amount of jury points.

Mélovin will represent Ukraine at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal this May. He was selected after winning Vidbir 2018 with his song “Under the Ladder”.

Ukraine first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003, when Oleksandr Ponomariov performed “Hasta la vista”. The following year Ruslana brought the country their first win with the song “Wild Dances”. It was a feat that would be replicated in 2016 by Jamala with her song “1944”; her emotionally charged song scored a record 534 points to take victory in Stockholm. Last year O.Torvald represented the country on home soil with the song “Time”. The group finished in 24th place, Ukraine’s worst result at the contest to date.
