The next artist featured in our “Who Is” series for the Eurovision 2018 season is AWS, the band from Hungary.
In February, it was decided that AWS would represent Hungary at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest after they won the Hungarian national final show A Dal. Let’s get to know a bit more about them.
AWS is a metal band from Budakeszi, Hungary. Formed in 2006, the band is made up of Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi, Áron Veress, and Soma Schiszler. The group is well known for their rock style, and throughout their career, they have released three singles, three albums and produced seven video clips. AWS has toured beyond Hungary, as they traveled to Austria, England, Romania, and Slovenia, and have played at festivals such as Sziget Festival. They have also won the MTV Brand award for New Winning Band.
In December last year, it was announced that the band would compete in A Dal 2018. When performing in both the heat and the semi-final, AWS would receive first place each time, and eventually went on to win the show with their song “Viszlát nyár”.
AWS will represent Hungary at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal this May. They were selected after they won the Hungarian national selection.
Hungary debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, they were represented by Friderika Bayer and the song “Kinek mondjam el vetkeimet”. She went on to finish in 4th place scoring a total of 122 points and four sets of 12 points. This result remains’ Hungary’s best in their history in the contest. Hungary participated from 1994 to 1994 before withdrawing until 2005, the country didn’t return again until 2008. Hungary then once again withdrew in 2010 before returning in 2011. Since their return in 2011 Hungary has qualified for the final every year.
