HRT, the Croatian national broadcaster, has revealed that Franka Batelić will represent Croatia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon with the song “Crazy”. The news was confirmed in a press release from HRT.
Franka was born on June 7 1992 in Rijeka in the north west of Croatia. She has been singing since the age of three. She first came to public attention after winning the talent show Showtime in 2007. Her 2008 song Ruža u kamenu (Rose in the stones) won the viewers’ choice award at the Croatian Radio Festival 2008 and also gave Croatia their first victory in the OGAE Song Contest that year. She also represented Croatia in the OGAE Song Contest 2009 with Možda volim te (Maybe I love you), which was her first number one hit in Croatia.
She has previously tried to represent Croatia on two occasions. In 2009, she finished 7th in Dora with Pjesma za kraj (Song for the end) and in 2010, she finished 8th with Na tvojim rukama (In your arms). Her other achievements include winning the fourth season of Ples sa zvijezdama (Dancing With the Stars) and opening for Beyoncé in Zagreb in 2013. After a break of four years, Franka released her comeback single S tobom (With you) in 2017.
Speaking about her participation, Franka said:
“When I was two, holding a remote control instead of a microphone, I was standing in front of our TV set, blundering through Tony Cetinski’s Nek ti bude ljubav sva when he represented Croatia at Eurovision 1994. I gushed to my mother and father, saying: ‘Do the same, do the same!’ That little girl inside me never stopped dreaming and now that dream is coming true! I will represent Croatia at Eurovision. I would like to thank Croatian Radiotelevision for inviting me and trusting me. My team and I are aware of the responsibility that this contest requires and we are ready to take on this challenge. We will do our utmost to represent Croatia in the best possible light in Portugal in May.”
The song that Franka will perform in Lisbon, “Crazy” was composed by Branimir Mihaljević and written by Franka herself. She will discuss her first impressions about being selected with HRT’s music editor, Zlatko Turkalj Turki on Drugi dio dana (The second part of the day) on HR 2 at 14.00 CET today.
Franka will perform in the second half of the first semi-final on May 8. HRT will broadcast all three shows on HRT 1, HR 2 and on phones, tablets and computers via HRTi multimedia service.
